Dear Parents, Guardians and Families:

I am pleased to welcome you into the JWU community; I look forward to having your student with us as he/she enters this new and exciting journey. The orientation program is a terrific learning experience for all who attend. When you arrive for check-in, prepare yourself to say goodbye to your student for the next 36 hours. We hope you embrace this opportunity to focus on the important information presented, take time to meet other families for this shared experience, and most importantly, enjoy yourself. You will learn about your role as advisor and supporter of your college student. The change in roles is not an easy one, but it is very important to your student’s success!

We offer a special one-day or two-day Family Orientation program which is designed for families of traditional age college students. The program will equip you with valuable information & resources, and gives you an opportunity to meet university staff, faculty, students and administrators. You will get answers to questions about the college experience at JWU. This is an extraordinary time for you and your student. As a family member, you get to share the excitement, anticipation, anxiety and joy of seeing your student transition into college life over the upcoming months and years. Even if you currently have or have had a student in college, JWU is a unique institution and information provided to you during family orientation will assist you in supporting your student here. While we encourage all parents/guardians to attend our program, parents and spouses/family members of non-traditional students may not find the information to be as helpful.

Please plan to attend the entire one-day or two-day program. The $25 (one-day) and $40 (two-day) per person fee includes meals, resource materials and activities. Once your student registers, you will receive a confirmation email.  Please be sure to complete the New Student Checklist with your student prior to attending orientation.

Family member who are unable to attend an orientation session are encouraged to review our Student & Family Resource Guide as it contains useful information on how to support your student.

If you have any questions about the program, feel free to contact New Student Orientation at 305-892-5388 or orientation.nmi@jwu.edu.

I look forward to meeting you over the summer,

Best,
Roxanne Vogel
Director of New Student Orientation & Campus Events

Accommodations

We have a small campus, and we regret that we do not have room to accommodate family members in our campus housing. Family members must arrange for their own accommodations.  Please visit the hotels tab for a list of hotels with special JWU rates.

Transportation

Family members are strongly encouraged to rent a car — JWU transportation is not available from area hotels to campus and public transportation can get costly.  Please visit the hotels tab for transportation options and discount codes.
